How Dolce & Gabbana met Game of Thrones
Series stars lend their faces to the new Dolce & Gabbana campaign “The One”
Celebrity faces have been associated with perfume brand campaigns for decades. In “The One”, the campaign recently launched by Dolce & Gabbana, however, it really does hit the mark. As part of this year’s autumn ad campaign, Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke, two of the best-known stars from HBO’s Game of Thrones, star in a series of ads for Dolce & Gabbana. The ads are joyous and full of life, as has become traditional with this famous fashion brand.
The perfect timing makes this campaign absolutely exceptional. Hearts leapt when Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen got together in a long-awaited passionate and romantic scene in the finale of the seventh season of Game of Thrones (broadcast in August 2017). This scene awakened the curiosity of fans of the series around the world, with plenty of theories popping up and everyone eagerly awaiting the next series. However, this won’t be on our screens until the end of 2018 or the beginning of 2019. Fans therefore hit the jackpot with this ad campaign and soon after the seventh series finished, could see both of their favourites side by side. Not only are these two stars amongst the most popular actors today, the name “The One” is perfect for the roles played by each of the characters in the series.
On the basis of the original book, it is speculated that one of the characters represented by Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke is covered by the ancient prophecy of "The One Who Was Promised". In the series it is said that a prince or princess will come who is supposed to save the world. Since the meaning of the ancient language has faded over time, it is not clear which of them is really “The One Who Was Promised”. The upcoming series will be the last one, however, so fans will finally find out who “the one” is. However, before this happens, we will be able to see these two famous actors in the ad campaign for the Dolce & Gabbana fragrance. And who knows, perhaps even afterwards! Thus far, it is not clear what the campaign will bring, but in the first two ads, both actors were filmed separately. While Kit Harington is the face of the campaign for the men’s Eau de Parfum “The One for Men”, Emilia Clarke is promoting the Eau de Toilette for women in the same range. Both ads were filmed in the current style of Dolce & Gabbana. The brand has been trying to evoke an atmosphere of Italy, family and community in its campaigns in recent years, not just for fragrances but for fashion as well.
The ads with both actors take place on the streets of Naples, where they sing, dance and eat with the locals. Surrounded by music, they enjoy the playful atmosphere of a late Italian afternoon in the sunshine. It is clear that the campaign aims to create the impression that both actors, whilst separate, are the ones the locals are trying to please. Though the environment is different, the idea is the same as in the series: both actors play the central role of “the one”.
Dolce & Gabbana has proven that it can shoot poignant and ageless advertisements. In 2001, its designers launched a range of clear, sparkling fragrances called “Light Blue”, with a men’s version also being launched as an Eau de Cologne for men, which was launched in 2008. This is still one of the most popular and best-selling fragrances today. The success of the range is largely thanks to the sexy promotional campaign with tanned models dressed in skimpy white swimsuits on the shores of the island of Capri. The unprecedented success of the fragrance is attributed to that Mediterranean spirit of the fragrance itself and the accompanying campaign.
“The One” seems to be moving in a similar vein. The mere connection of a very popular fragrance line to huge stars in the acting world represents huge potential. As the cooperation is only in its early stages, fans are passionately discussing how the campaign is going to develop and whether the actors will also appear in a joint advert.
“The One for Men” fragrance for men
Immerse yourself in the world of “The One for Men” and be carried away by the complex aroma profile of this popular Eau de Cologne. The head is made up of overtones of grapefruit, coriander and basil, which go through a spicy scent of cardamon and ginger. The base of the fragrance is an aroma of tobacco and cedar wood.

“The One” for women is a mixture of rich notes created using bergamot and mandarin orange with juicy lychees and peaches, which develop further into the scent of white lily. The heart and base are permeated with the rich scent of vanilla and amber, finally balanced with a touch of musk.
